New Zealand Modern School of Music has been in operation for over 80 years and is New Zealand’s only national music school. We operate in regions all across New Zealand.

We currently have 75 teachers that we manage. If you are interested in lessons for you or your child, we provide you information on our school and teachers in your area. If you are happy to proceed we pass your details on to your local teacher and they contact you to organise a lesson time. Our lessons run in conjunction with the school terms – 4 terms/10 weeks per term.

New Zealand Modern School of Music has its own range of music tuition books which the teachers use. We also provide our own Theory Exams and Practical Exams. These exams are optional but are a great way to encourage students and also to gauge their progress.

Our music school also holds Annual Music Competitions so that students can get familiar with performing in front of an audience. It also makes them very proud of their achievements and provides further encouragement.

OUR CURRICULUM WAS CREATED BY SOME OF NEW ZEALAND'S BEST MUSIC TEACHERS, FOR THE BENEFIT OF LEARNERS OF AT ALL STAGES

NZMSM curriculum is designed by the NZ Modern School of Music Practical Exam Advisory Board which includes managers and examiners from across the country. They meet regularly and continually review and assess the current exam material and learning material that makes up our curriculum.

This curriculum is only available through the NZ Modern School of Music Auckland and has been a huge success over the years. Our courses are tailored to your instrument and ability. NZ Modern School of Music books are only  available to our teachers and pupils.

For Piano, first you will grow familiar with the concepts of notation and timing before attempting our Modern Piano Course. By the time you start the study of modern style piano you will have progressed through our piano books 1-5 and be ready to attempt new melodies and harmonies.

As you progress, you will start arranging pieces the way you like to play them, including lots of embellishments, fills, introductions and endings, runs within the piece etc. You will then start to write your own melody outlines which helps you to write your own music. You are encouraged to experiment and add your own harmony and bass lines after a short time.

WHAT IS MODERN STYLE PIANO?

Modern style piano consists of a melody line played with the right hand and harmony added beneath it. The use of chord symbols above (or sometimes below) the melody indicates the notes which will be added to the melody to fill it out.
The function of the left hand is to provide a strong rhythmic pattern for the tune and at the same time assist in the chordal construction by use of broken chord sequences. Bass patterns of this nature may be varied and extended to include minor 3rds and Dominant and Major 7ths plus the octave.

Some of the styles are Boogie Bass – Latin/Pop Bass – Walking Bass – Arpeggio Bass styles. Our piano teachers use 40 different bass styles for pieces so the pupil can decide which they want to use.

Please note: If you have learnt music previously and wish to develop a new style, your teacher will need to assess your level of ability before deciding where to start.
